Wendy Pilichowski has spent her life teaching people, who are living away from their native language, how to speak English as a second language. Now Wendy is taking on the role of her students, as she is traveling to Pulawy, Poland for a year to teach. Pilichowski was picked for the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program and will be in Poland during the 2007-2008 school year. Trading places with Wendy is Marta Tarnowska, an English, American History and World Studies teacher.

While the two educators are looking to gain a lot from their coming experience personally, they also want to have a positive impact on the cultures understanding each other. They go not just to teach academic subjects, but to bring foreign cultures abroad in an effort to increase peoples’ awareness of those outside their own societies.

These hopes of Ms. Pilichowski and Ms. Tarnowska fit in perfectly with the program they will represent. The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program was started a year after World War II concluded by the United States Department of State with the purpose of improving the understanding people around the world had of America and vice versa. 170 Americans will participate this coming year, going to over 150 different nations across the globe. To get into the program, one must be selected based on the academic or professional achievements, as well as their ability to lead.

With the goal of cultural understanding in mind, Wendy and Marta look to impart as much knowledge about their homes on students, despite being in new places themselves.
