The United States has gained the reputation as the land of opportunity throughout its history. Immigrants from all over the world have traveled to America, looking for a new life; it is known as the American Dream. For Roma From, the American Dream is her life. Roma From is a native of Poland, having lived in the oppressive socialist era that followed World War II. In 1986, From made the bold decision to leave her home and everything she knew, including her daughters, behind in hopes of building a better life. She arrived in the United States with no possessions to her name and no ability to communicate in English. From’s life in America started off slow. She was unable to find a job, being rejected by the first ten companies she interviewed with. Unable to speak the language, Roma simply memorized the questions employers were asking and the answers she needed to give. Her hard work paid off, and she was able to find a job as a housekeeper. During her first years in America, Roma met Walter From, the man she would later marry. Four years after her move, Roma was reunited with her daughters, who were able to afford a move to the United States. While working as a housekeeper, From witnessed everything her new home had to offer and decided she wanted to start a career where she could truly reap the benefits of the American economy. After some time, she was hired as a receptionist at a staffing firm. It was here that she first got into the industry of staffing and realized her desire to one day build her own staffing business. As she had with her desire to live in the United States, Roma From would not allow anything obstacle to prevent her from building her business. After receiving a small business loan from Elgin Community College, she started Roma Staffing, a firm that caters specifically to light industrial and white-collar businesses, providing them with highly qualified employees. The business has grown consistently since its inception and now is a multi-million dollar company. Due to her hard work and perseverance, Roma From has become to true embodiment of the American Dream. Read more at www.usinfo.state.gov |
