Beware of the Pierogatory or better known as the headquarters of the neighborhood festival: Pierogi Fest, where it ran its thirteenth season on July 27th through the 29th only miles from Chicago in the small town of Whiting, Indiana, a predominately large Polish and Slovak community.

DSCN2033.jpg Families gathered together to celebrate one of the “top 10 Wackiest Festivals,” according to the “Virtual Tourists,” where one could taste traditional Pierogi, Kielbasa and Sauerkraut. In addition to dinner plates, desserts and fruit smoothies filled up the visitors appetites and kept them cool during the summer heat.

Polka Bands, performers, and eating contests provided entertainment. Many people from all generations joined in the fun by dancing the Polka. One of the most famous entertainers presented was Mr. Pierogi and his Pieroguettes who are Pierogi Fest’s own dance team. Every year they perform an act which is called the “Mr. Pierogi Songfest.” The Polka Parade kicked off the event on Friday night where an expected 8,000 people were to show and exhibit various acts such as the Babushka Brigade, the Lawn Mowing Drill Team, the Lazy Boys, and the Bag Pipers.

l_390cca5da70a5d12b84e521a0.jpg As this was one highlight of the celebration, everyone came around on Saturday to watch the preparation and to consume a local businessman’s dream. Twenty- Five pounds of flour, thirty eggs, a gallon of water, forty potatoes, and two pounds of butter later what do we have? The Worlds Largest Pierog! Forty-eight by thirty-five inches and weighing an astonishing one hundred pounds is a dream come true for Tim King a resident who said "I am half-Polish and have been around pierogi all my life. And, believe it or not, I had a dream about my Uncle Emil, who is deceased. We were eating pierogi together and he told me to cook the world's largest pierog." With the help of his friend and former Chef, Eric Mansfield, he was able to complete his wish, which has become one of the main attractions at the Pierogi Festival.

The Pierogi packed weekend did not end there, the Pierogi toss and Pierogi eating contest concluded the fair on Sunday.

Be sure to Czech them out next year! For more information and videos visit: www.pierogifest.net , www.video.aol.com , www.marketwire.com
